How to

ID scan: add cards from photos

ID scan recognizes cards from a photo of their front, so you can add a pile of cards without searching. It reads International and Japanese cards; Simplified Chinese ones only sometimes, so far. Free accounts get 30 ID scans a month, and the camera shows how many are left.

  1. Tap the orange camera button in the middle of the tab bar. ID scan is picked when the camera opens.
  2. Lay a card face up, filling most of the picture, in good light. Tap it to focus, then take the photo. Already have photos of your cards? Tap the photos button bottom right to pick them from your library. The camera button top right switches camera.
  3. The card drops into the pile bottom left and is read while you scan the next one. Scan as many as you like.
  4. Tap the pile to see your list. Each card starts as the version closest to your photo, in Near Mint. Tap Version or Condition to change them.
  5. Tap More versions to see every version of the card in big pictures and pick yours, or to choose a different card or search for it. Tap Remove to take a card off the list.
  6. Tap the button at the bottom (Add 3 cards to my collection, say). Every card is added, acquired today; change anything on each card’s own page.

Good to know

  • With Cardkept Pro, one photo can hold several cards: a binder page in its sleeves, or up to nine cards side by side, none overlapping. Each card gets its own row and counts as one scan.
PRO Scan: bring your card to life

PRO Scan turns your own card into a 3D card that shines and tilts as you move your phone, with its real foil, sparkle and texture.

  1. Tap the orange camera button in the middle of the tab bar, pick PRO Scan above the shutter, then Start scanning.
  2. Step 1, Front photo: lay the card face up on a plain background in soft daylight. Tap the card to focus, then take the photo.
  3. Check the outline. If it is off, drag a corner. Then tap Use photo (or Retake).
  4. Step 2, Back photo: turn the card over and do the same.
  5. Step 3, Tilt scan: tap Start the tilt and tilt the card slowly in every direction for 10 seconds, keeping the whole card on screen. The big orange arrow points to the edge still to lift towards the phone, and the tilt runs on a few seconds while one edge has barely been tilted.
  6. Wait a moment while your phone builds Your PRO Scan. Tilt your phone to see it move.
  7. Tap Save to a copy I own, or Add a new copy, to keep it.

Good to know

  • Tap Tips & tricks on the front and tilt steps for lighting help. One light above you works best: a ceiling light or a lamp.
  • Capture as little glare as you can: too much of it spoils the scan. A yellow glare warning means the light is reflecting off the card: tilt a little away from the light. You’ll still catch the foil.
  • Hold the card flat on your palm for the tilt if you can. Shadows from your fingers can spoil the scan.
  • Focus on capturing the card’s holo pattern. When it lights up, slow down and tilt back and forth over that angle. That’s what gives the best scan.
  • If a photo is blurry or has a shine on it, the app asks you to retake it. A sharp photo makes a sharper PRO Scan.
  • Keep your phone’s reflection off the card. If you can see your phone mirrored in a shiny card or its holo window, move a little to one side before you take the photo.
  • The camera needs your permission. If you said no before, tap Open Settings and switch it on.
  • If the tilt won’t make a good PRO Scan (too much glare, the card left the picture, or an edge was barely tilted), the app says why before building it: tap Tilt again, or Use it anyway. Your two photos are kept.
Save a PRO Scan
  1. While you take the back photo and the tilt, the front photo is read to work out which card it is (one of your ID scans for the month). After the build, the card is shown under your PRO Scan with its market price. If it’s the wrong card, tap Not this card.
  2. Select its condition, then tap Save to your collection. It is added as a raw card you got today, with the PRO Scan on it. You can change anything on its page.
  3. Congratulations! Tap See it in my collection to find it in Collection, or PRO Scan another card. It finishes saving in the background, so you can close the scan straight away.

Good to know

  • Free accounts get 5 PRO Scans to start, then 1 a month. The camera shows how many are left. Scanning a copy again uses one too.
  • Already have the card in your collection, as a raw card? Open the copy, tap Edit , then PRO Scan this card (Redo PRO Scan if it has one). A graded slab can’t be PRO Scanned. The scan goes straight onto that copy, its details untouched, and doesn’t use an ID scan, because the card is already known.
  • A copy keeps one PRO Scan. Scanning it again replaces the old one, and its picture in your collection.
  • A PRO Scan saved before October 18, 2026 keeps smaller photos, so Inspect shows less detail when you zoom in. Scan it again for sharper corners.
  • If the signal drops, your PRO Scan waits on your phone and uploads by itself later. The copy’s page shows Try again if you want to nudge it.
See and adjust your PRO Scan
  1. Open the copy. If it has a PRO Scan, it shows first. Swipe sideways for the catalog picture.
  2. Tilt your phone to move the card. Tap it to flip it. Press and hold, then drag, to tilt it with your finger.
  3. Tap PRO Scan (the sliders, beside Inspect) to change the foil strength, the sparkle, the light and more. Tap Save my settings when you like it.
  4. Tap Inspect to see it flat, front and back, as it was photographed, with no shine added. Pinch to zoom, double-tap to zoom in or out, or tap a corner to jump to it.

Good to know

  • The Kind settings button (for example Holo settings) puts everything back to that kind’s starting look.
  • In Collection, Sort and filter, Scans, PRO Scan shows only the cards that have a PRO Scan.

Questions

What’s the difference between ID scan and PRO Scan?

ID scan works out which card is in front of the camera and adds it to your collection, so you can add a pile of cards without searching. PRO Scan makes a 3D copy of your very card, with its own foil, sparkle, texture and every mark, to tilt and flip on your phone. It works out which card it is too, from the front photo, so you can add it in one tap. Both are on the orange camera button in the middle of the tab bar.

Can I scan a graded slab?

Slab scanning is part of Cardkept Pro: ID scan reads the slab’s label (the grading company, the grade and the cert number) and adds the card graded. Without Pro, ID scan spots a slab and asks you to remove it from the list, so it’s never added as a raw card; you can still add it yourself: open the card, tap Add to collection, choose Graded slab and pick the company and grade.

Why didn’t ID scan recognize my card?

Most misses come from the photo: the card too small in the picture, glare across it, or another object beside it. Lay the card flat in good light, fill most of the picture, and tap Try again or scan it again. Simplified Chinese cards are often not recognized yet. Where there’s no exact match, the list shows the closest card in our catalog, never as the answer: tap More versions or Not this card to pick the right one or search for it.

Does a scan send my photo anywhere?

ID scan does: each photo, made smaller, goes through our server to Ximilar, the card-reading service that recognizes it, and isn’t kept by us or added to your collection. PRO Scan sends its front photo the same way, to work out which card it is. The rest of a PRO Scan never leaves your phone until you save it to one of your cards, and the video of your tilt is never kept. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Is there a Home Screen widget?

Yes, for your PRO Scans, with Cardkept Pro. Touch and hold your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Cardkept; it comes in small and medium. Your card shows in 3D at a different angle every half an hour: Tilt turns it, Flip shows its back, Next moves to your next card, and tapping it opens the card in Cardkept. To choose which cards it shows, touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget; pick up to five of your PRO Scans. With none picked it shows your Favorites first, then your newest scans. It never shows a price.
